Schriever Air Force Base

Schriever AFB is located south east of Colorado Springs and carries a sense of mystery for most locals. Restricted access for only those with the required clearance prevents this base from becoming a major military attraction. The limited facilities on base serve the working members of the base and little else. It is home to Air Force Space Command's  50th Space Wing, which provides command and control for many of the Department of Defense warning, navigational, and communications satellites. Also housed at Schriever AFB are the Missile Defense Integration and Operations Center and the Space Innovation & Development Center. Schriever AFB is the main control point for the Global Positioning System (GPS).

The following are suggested routes and approximate drive times from various Academy District-20 neighborhoods to Scriever Air Force Base:

• Northwest D-20 (Gleneagle, Flying Horse, Pine Creek, Pleasant View Estate): 45-60 minutes (Woodmen east to Marksheffel, south to CO 94, east to Curtis Rd, south to the Shriever gate)
• Northeast D-20 (Black Forest): 40-50 minutes (Powers south to Woodmen east to Marksheffel, south to CO 94, east to Curtis Rd south to the Shriever gate)
• Central D-20 (Briargate): 35-45 minutes (Research east to Powers, south to Woodmen east to Marksheffel, south to CO 94, east to Curtis Rd south to the Shriever gate)
• Southwest D-20 (Peregrine, Woodmen Valley, Rockrimmon): 45-55 minutes (East on Rockrimmon to east Woodmen, south on Academy Blvd, east on Platte (Hwy 24) toward Limon, east on Co 94, south on Curtis Rd to Shriever gate)
• Southeast D-20 (Cordera, Wolf Ranch, Highland Park, eastern Briargate): 30-35 minutes (Woodmen east to Marksheffel, south to CO 94, east on CO 94 to Curtis Rd, south to the Shriever gates).
